211 coaches at institutions in Shelby County earned $122,181 on average in 2022

Shelby County’s 211 coaches earned an average salary of $122,181 in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

This is the fourth highest average salary per county earned by coaches at Tennessee post-secondary schools during 2022.

Shelby County is home to five post-secondary schools that paid coaches during 2022. Among them, University of Memphis stood out with the highest average coaching salary of $432,378.

Male coaches of men's teams received $199,572 on average in Shelby County, while female coaches in charge of women's teams earned an average of $60,649.

Research from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management found NCAA coaches are compensated like CEOs, with top coaches earning more than $1.5 million annually.
